Even though we're suburban dwellers, we still see quite a bit of wildlife in our neighborhood. At this time of year, it's not unusual to spot deer in the front yard and a neighbor reported recent sightings of coyotes. Today, a bird of prey has been visiting our property several times and we have watched it with great curiosity.
It's been about a year since I last posted referral results from the MOJ in Bulgaria. The main reason was that the MOJ revamped its website and for the longest time, I couldn't find the info after the new site was up and running. But, I have re-discovered it, so here are all of the results published in 2020. As you will see, the IAC sessions are not labeled in chronological order and I am not sure why, but this is what's posted.
The big take-aways from this data for those waiting for a traditional referral are that of all the referrals made in this period, only 20% were considered fully healthy by the MOJ and of those 20%, 86% were sibling groups and/or children over the age of 10. Among the traditional referrals under the age of 4, less then 10% of the children were considered to be healthy by the MOJ.

Today my daughters experienced a historic moment that will shine new possibilities onto their paths.
Here's what Rex's home school work area looked like in the middle of his 3 hour 20 minute one on one instruction time this morning. I so enjoy seeing him deep into his IEP goals, art projects, book projects, and even games to boost fine motor skills. Home school is so productive for him that he has already met multiple IEP objectives that were just written in November. Go Team Rex!

Surprisingly, this week went well and felt relaxing and calm. It's no secret that my children struggle with holidays to different extents and that the triggered trauma puts a strain on all of us as we live through presumably special times each year. It's difficult to find the balance between keeping things small and low key to increase emotional regulation and doing some of what the kids enjoy in December.
Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday were morning only school and therapy days and we took advantage of the mild weather for afternoon outdoor time. On Wednesday we even ventured to the Nature Center for a hike through the woods which was so much fun.
We had free admission to a large, local drive-through light display and very much enjoyed it.
On Thursday we stayed in - it was cold and dreary - and prepared for Christmas. We started our traditional cinnamon rolls for Christmas brunch, refreshed the greenery around the house, watched a lot of TV, cleaned a little bit, and snuggled up. Of course, we had our annual Christmas Eve picnic on the family room carpet with Polar Express and the NORAD Santa Tracker on in the background. Later in the evening, dear friends surprised us with caroling and gifts. How much fun to see Santa, Mrs. Claus, and an elf in our driveway.
Christmas Day brought just a few presents for each of us, brunch, movies, and of course an Asian carry-out dinner. The weekend was low key and I made everyone pitch in on a cleaning morning.
The elf got a little frazzled this week, but still managed to show up before bowing out... forever.
Week 4 - out the door!
This week the anticipation for Christmas really kicked up a notch. Emilia discovered the song Feliz Navidad and now we have to sing it a lot. The kids also decorated a gingerbread house. Teachers and therapists added special holiday activities to their sessions to make the wait more fun and we wrapped and gave them their holiday gifts because one little sprite couldn't wait. On Sunday night, we met friends at a park for a Light in the Woods walk. Rex liked it so much that he asked to go through the entire loop again and we did. And, of course, the elf...
