The Heart - One Year Later

One year ago today, Emilia had her open heart surgery which entailed several hours on a heart and lung bypass machine.  She then spent four more days in the hospital before being allowed to come home.

Emilia's recovery after the surgery was quick and smooth.  She has had two cardio check-ups since then and everything is looking good, including her scar.  Here are photos of her scar then and now.  It has healed beautifully.

There has only been one negative effect on Emilia from the surgery and her hospital stay and that's a deep fear of doctors, nurses and medical procedures which she did not have prior to that experience.  Knowing Emilia's personality, I think it will take a while before she is comfortable and calm in a medical setting again.  However, we are thankful that her heart is strong and healthy.
